Rerouting a dryer vent in Pacific Palisades

Older bungalows and service porches here were built for a clothesline, not a dryer. The laundry got added later. So the duct often takes the long way around, through an attic with elbows from a hallway closet, or up a hillside home to a roof jack. Rerouting means picking a shorter, straighter path and ending it somewhere lint can leave.

Every 90-degree elbow costs you equivalent length. Manufacturers publish a maximum developed length for each model, and elbows subtract from it. Many long attic and roof runs here already exceed that figure. Adding insulation, flex duct, or a sagging foil section makes it worse. A reroute trades elbows for distance. Dropping a second-floor run down an interior wall to a side-wall hood often beats fighting a clogged roof jack screen every few months.

We use rigid metal for the concealed run. Foil flex is for the transition behind the dryer only, and even that gets crushed by pedestal sets pushed tight to the wall.

Not every job should be rerouted. Sometimes the existing path is fine and the real problem is a flapper hood stuck shut with lint. We will say so. Condo stacked closets sharing a vertical chase usually need HOA approval before anything changes.
