Dryer vent work in Pacific Palisades
The Palisades splits into bluff, mesa, and canyon neighborhoods, and the vent run follows the terrain. Village-area Spanish and cottage homes from the 1920s through the 1940s usually vent laundry off a service porch or a detached garage. That is a short wall run. Those are quick jobs and the hood sits at eye level. Post-2000 rebuilds are the opposite. Laundry moved upstairs, and the duct climbs vertically to a roof jack above a steep pitch.
Steep roof pitch changes the method. We work the line from the laundry side with a rotary brush where the roof will not take safe footing. Lint settles at the base of a vertical run, not the top. That is where the clog usually sits.
Marine layer mornings keep humidity up. Clothes come out damp, people run a second cycle, and more lint loads a duct that is already restricted. Drying time creeping longer is the signal worth watching.
Santa Ana winds push canyon dust and dry vegetation debris into exterior hoods. Canyon-adjacent homes get worse. Birds and rodents nest at terminations where the damper no longer closes. We check the flap and the screen, not just the duct interior.
Ask us what we pulled out. A photo of the debris tells you more than any report.

Frequently Asked Questions
- My laundry is upstairs and the vent goes up to the roof — can you even clean that?
Yes, and it's the most common setup we see in the rebuilt and hillside houses here. Those runs go vertical through a wall or chase and terminate at a roof jack, often on a steep pitch. We clean from the dryer end with rotating brush rods and work the lint upward, then confirm the termination from the roof when the pitch and footing allow it safely. If the roof is too steep to walk, we still check airflow at the hood from a ladder at the eave and document what we find instead of guessing. Long vertical runs hold lint differently than a short wall run, so they usually need more rod length and more time at the dryer connection.
- We've had birds in the vent before. Can you clear a nest and keep them out?
This comes up constantly on canyon-adjacent lots. Birds and rodents treat a dryer hood as a sheltered cavity, and once a nest goes in, the damper stops closing and the blockage builds fast. We remove the nest material from the termination and clear the duct back through, then check whether the existing hood still has a working damper. A lot of the older hoods on service-porch walls are flat louvered covers that no longer seal, which is exactly what invites nesting. We'll tell you if the hood should be swapped for a damper-type termination. We don't recommend screens or mesh over the opening; they catch lint and become their own blockage.
