Is that silver hose behind the dryer the same thing as the vent?

No. The flexible piece between the dryer and the wall is the transition hose. The duct inside the wall, attic or chase is separate. Each one fails differently. The hose is what we replace on this call. Thin foil accordion hose is the usual culprit. Every ridge catches lint. The hose sags behind the machine and holds a low spot. Moisture collects there. White vinyl hose should come out on sight.

We replace with semi-rigid aluminum and worm-gear clamps. No sheet metal screws into the airstream, and no foil tape doing structural work. Manufacturer instructions cap transition length and bend count, so we keep the run short and the sweep gentle.

Clearance is the real constraint here. Pedestal washer and dryer sets push the machine back and crush the hose into an S. Prewar bungalow service porches have shallow alcoves, and condo stacked closets behind bifold doors have almost no depth. A periscope or close-elbow fitting usually buys back several inches.

A new hose will not fix a stuck exterior flapper hood. It will not clear a lint-packed roof jack either. A bird nest in a garage termination is its own repair. We check static behavior at the outlet before and after. Gas dryers get a backdraft check too.
