Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Pacific Palisades, CA
Common questions from homeowners in Pacific Palisades and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often should a dryer vent in the Palisades actually be cleared?
Once a year covers most households here. There is no real heating season on this side of the Santa Monica Mountains, so dryers run year-round rather than in winter bursts, and lint accumulates on a steady schedule instead of a seasonal one. Families with kids, anyone washing beach towels and sandy swim gear all summer, or a house running a dryer most days should look at every eight months or so. If your laundry room sits on a bluff street with a long run out to the roof, shorten that interval again.

Which symptoms point to a clogged vent?
The clearest one is drying time. A load that used to finish in one cycle and now needs two is telling you the hot, wet air has nowhere to go. Other signs: the dryer drum and the laundry room both feel hot at the end of a cycle, clothes come out damp at the edges, you smell something scorched or musty, or the outside flap barely moves when the machine is running. Lint collecting on the floor around the dryer or on the exterior hood is a late sign, not an early one.

What happens step by step once your tech is at the door?
He finds both ends first: the dryer connection inside and the termination outside, which in the Palisades is often a roof cap or a hood up on a second-story wall. The dryer gets pulled out and disconnected, and we check the transition hose behind it, since that short piece is crushed or kinked more often than the duct itself. Then we run a rotating brush on flexible rods through the full length, working with a vacuum at one end so the lint comes out instead of packing deeper. We clear the exterior hood and flap, reconnect, run a cycle, and confirm airflow at the outlet. Then we show you what came out.

How long will I need to be home for this?
Plan on about an hour for a standard run. A first-floor laundry room venting straight through an exterior wall can be finished faster. Longer jobs are the hillside rebuilds with laundry on an upper floor and a run up to the roof, plus any vent that has not been touched in years and is packed solid. If we open things up and find a nest, a disconnected joint inside a wall, or crushed flex duct, we stop and tell you what we found before we keep going.

What makes one dryer vent job cost more than another?
Length and access drive it. A short straight shot out a mesa-level wall is the easy end. The number climbs when the duct runs up through two floors of a hillside custom rebuild to a roof cap, when the termination needs ladder work on a steep slope, or when there are four or five elbows that each have to be brushed separately. Nest removal, a crushed or collapsed section that needs replacing, and a dryer wedged into a tight 1920s Village laundry closet that has to be pulled and reseated all add time. The estimate is free and you approve the number before anything gets opened up.

How do I know the machine isn't the real problem?
Run one test. Disconnect the duct from the back of the dryer, run a short cycle venting straight into the room, and see if it dries normally. If it does, the dryer is fine and the duct is the problem. If it still runs long and the drum gets hot, you are looking at a failing heating element, a bad thermostat, or a worn blower wheel, and that is an appliance repair call. We tell you which one it is instead of cleaning a vent that was never the issue.

Rigid metal duct versus the flexible stuff: does the difference matter?
It matters a lot. Smooth rigid metal lets lint ride the airstream out. The ribbed flexible kind, and especially the old foil or plastic accordion hose, grabs lint at every ridge and holds it. Flex also sags, and a sag behind the dryer becomes a low spot where damp lint settles and hardens. We see a lot of it in the 1950s-60s ranch and post-and-beam houses on the mesa where laundry got added or moved later. If yours is foil or vinyl, replacing it with rigid metal and keeping the flexible section to a short connector behind the machine will change how the dryer performs.

There's an animal nest in my vent. Can you deal with that?
Yes, and it comes up here. Houses back up to the canyon slopes and the Santa Monica Mountains, and birds and roof rats go for a warm vent hood with a broken or missing flap. We pull the nest material out from the termination side, clear whatever got pushed down the duct, and clean up after it. Then we install a proper hood with a working damper and a guard, because clearing it without fixing the opening just means the same call in a few months. If anything is still living in there, we handle it accordingly and do not seal it shut.

My vent run is way too long. Any way to fix that?
Usually, yes. The first thing we look at is whether the path can be shortened or straightened, since elbows cost you more airflow than straight footage does. On the large hillside rebuilds with interior laundry rooms, rerouting to a nearer exterior wall is sometimes possible and sometimes not, depending on what the framing allows. Where rerouting is off the table, a booster fan wired to run with the dryer handles the extra distance. We measure the actual run and the elbow count, then tell you which option fits your house.

Do you have openings today, and where do you work?
Same-day slots are usually available, and morning calls have the best odds. We cover Pacific Palisades top to bottom: the Village and Huntington, the Alphabet Streets, Marquez Knolls, Riviera, the bluff and mesa streets, and the canyon addresses heading inland. We work the coastal corridor between Santa Monica and Malibu as well. Tell us roughly where you are and we will give you a real arrival window, not a vague half-day block.
